Artist’s Statement

I always knew creativity was my main drive, even when I had no idea what I wanted to do with it. I find myself constantly chipping away at something—anything. When I'm creating, I feel the most fulfilled. But my general philosophy has always been very simple: I just want to make stuff that people can enjoy.

I am a graphic designer, web designer, and video editor with a wide range of interests across digital creative fields. I try to make my work feel fun, humorous, and exciting, while keeping it clean, calculated, and effective. What inspires me most is the design that surrounds us in everyday life and largely goes unnoticed: advertising, symbols, package design, the visual language of ordinary things. I find it fascinating to analyze these from a designer's perspective, because everything is purposeful; everything was made by someone with a specific vision. That realization is what keeps me looking, and keeps me motivated to improve.

Ultimately, I want to use design to impact people, even in small ways. It is, to me, one of the most effective tools we have for communicating ideas clearly, and I intend to keep using it.

Biography

Sean McGovern is a graphic designer, web designer, and digital media creator from Pine Bush, NY. At Marist University, he is pursuing a B.S. in Digital Media with a concentration in Graphic Design and a minor in Interactive Media. A chronic doodler throughout his school years, Sean always knew his boundless creative energy was his greatest drive, even before he knew where it would take him. A Media Arts course in high school introduced him to the world of graphic design, through programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator, setting him on his path.

McGovern went on to earn an A.A.S. in Visual Communications from SUNY Orange, where he built a strong foundation in design and developed proficiency in UX/UI design for the web. During a Practicum internship, he applied these skills by designing published websites for local businesses. His work has also been exhibited in the Orange Hall Gallery, where his poster design won the Spring 2024 Emerging Visions exhibition.

He continues to bring his design sensibilities to every project, driven by a commitment to making an impact and a determination to keep creating and improving.
