Symbolic Intuition

During my studies as a graphic designer, I've realized that design surrounds us everywhere. One of the most overlooked yet omnipresent examples is the signs and symbols we see, pass by, and interact with every day—the study of which is known as semiotics. We understand the meaning of these symbols intuitively, yet we rarely think to question who created them or how they came to be. Signs are meaningful pieces of design; each was devised by a person with a specific thought process and creative vision. By reinterpreting thirty of the most recognizable icons, each through a unique visual style that reflects their history, artistry, or popular usage, I aim to show how universally understandable they remain, even when obscured or depicted in unconventional ways. I want to encourage us to think about the design we encounter every day, but often take for granted.
